Safe-space Personal Development

'"The greatest challenge of life is how to enjoy it" -   Nathaniel Brandon

The idea of running the following workshops originated from my own personal and professional development as a counsellor/psychotherapist and artist, where I became aware of an increasing need for individuals to experience a deeper sense of connection to themselves, others and the world around them.

As many of us are already aware, the world has changed rapidly within the last 70 years, giving way to significant transitions on a collective and personal level.

Huge expansion in population, massive advances in technology and increasing changes in approaches to health and well-being have contributed to what feels like a sense of utter chaos on an external level, and a deep isolation on an individual one.

However, as Nietzsche states (from his work Thus Spake Zarathustra)

‘I say unto you: One must still have chaos in oneself to be able to give birth to a dancing star.’

What we aim to give in these workshops is a sense of hope that out of our individual and collective chaos will emerge, in time, a more accepting, compassionate and enlightened state of consciousness.

This will enable us to respond to our own and others egos in a more constructive way, allowing us to live more meaningful and fulfilling lives.

Discovering Self-Worth

(One day)

This workshop intends to:

  • explore what Self-worth actually means to us
  • learn ways of accessing and experiencing a sense of worth/value

This will include discussions, practical and meditative exercises on the concept of Self-esteem, incorporating questions such as: What is this? How do we measure it? Are the ways in which we measure our self-esteem actually detrimental to our sense of self-worth? How can we feel genuine confidence?

We will also explore the importance of effective communication and how this is imperative to more constructive intrapersonal (how we relate to ourselves) and interpersonal (how we relate to others) relationships.

The workshop will include concepts of NLP, (neuro-linguistic programming) assertiveness training and non-violent communication.

Self-exploration through the Arts

(One day)

This workshop intends to:

  • explore what creativity or ‘being artistic’ actually means to us.
  • challenge erroneous beliefs that we may have learnt about our creativity.
  • give ourselves permission to experiment and ‘play’.

My experience as an artist has taught me that any of the creative arts can contribute a sense of joy/wonder to our lives, in addition to aiding the healing process.

During the scientific age, much value has been place on rational, logical thought, with emotional intelligence, imagination and intuition being immensely undervalued.

This has led to the majority of people in western society becoming ‘stuck’ in utilising the left brain hemisphere, (the part of the brain where cognitive processes necessary for reason, logic, linear thinking, problem solving and task based activities reside) with the right brain hemisphere (the part of the brain where imagination, intuition, lateral thinking and spontaneity/creative ideas originate) being woefully neglected.

The workshop will be experiential; a combination of questions, discussions, practical and creative exercises to help us access and experiment with the creative part of our being, allowing us to learn that we are more than we think we are.

Psycho-spiritual development

(Two days)

These workshops intend to:

  • explore what Meditation means to you
  • discuss spiritual belief systems and psychological practices
  • learn diaphragmatic breathing, visualisation and meditative techniques to support you on a daily basis
  • reconnect with your intuition and experience a deeper connection with like-minded people

As I have mentioned in my welcome statement, a deep shift in consciousness is gradually occurring, and this workshop will be a space to facilitate your own personal transition; to become aware of your ‘Self-construct’ and the part of the self that doesn’t have to identify with this.

The workshop will include exploration of your own thoughts, emotions and behaviour in relation to your ‘ego’ self, in addition to learning about Jung’s concept of ‘The Shadow’.

We will also be exploring reactions to difficult mental and emotional states, learning more constructive ways of responding to the latter.

These workshops are experiential; a combination of discussion, questions, practical, visual and meditative exercises. Keeping a journal of the process is encouraged, but not obligatory.
